Music Production Must-Haves
Before you plunge into the world of music production, you must be prepared to withstand any hurdle or demands of the profession. Every music producer needs to be armed with good equipment, access to some good software that make mixing smooth and have some knowledge of the technicalities involved in the job. A music producer is a brand and needs to promote his image as well as his music. What better way to publicize your music than the online medium.
Create a My Space account
The first thing you would want to do is to open a MySpace account. Upload all your original compositions, fill up your profile with interesting information about yourself and your music, mention some of your favourite bands and define your genre clearly. Some funky album art would be great additions. If you have participated in any local or college gigs, put up photos of those events. If you have footage, even better. Make sure you update your MySpace account regularly with new music, keep adding to your profile, answer comments, and receive feedback constructively.
Good software for mixing music
Having access to some good music softwares is a must for anyone in music production. There are programs galore available on the internet which don't cost the earth. They teach you all about music production online and also have loads of online step-by-step tutorials for you to take. There are specific softwares available that allow you to introduce different drumbeats to your compositions and create a texture. Some of other sounds that you can infuse are techno, rap, electronica and trance. A combination of your original tracks combined with some upbeats rhythms will help create contemporary and fresh sound.
Microphones
Choosing a good microphone is an important step to recording a good sound for your music. Three kinds of microphones are primarily used in music production. The condenser microphones are used by studio technicians to tap into sounds that are very delicate - such as sounds from a violin, guitar or a woman's voice. As the name goes, dynamic microphones are used to capture live performances where there is a lot of noise and the sounds are very strong. Ribbon microphones are used to create a unique sound because they usually capture a blend of both delicate as well as strong sounds. The idea is to experiment with all three types of microphones so that the sound you record is quirky and your signature tune.
Audio engineering
Apart from dabbling in music, a music producer must also have sound knowledge of audio engineering processes. He must have enough knowledge and practice to be able to record sounds, mix sounds, master digital audio sounds in such a way so that it is beautifully compatible with his compositions. A mix of creativity and technology is what is required of a music producer. Your music might be great but without audio engineering techniques to enhance them, it might fall flat. As a music producer you have three very important roles to play. In your space you are first and foremost a performer who creates original pieces, secondly you are an audio engineer who knows where to tweak the music with some extra sound, some jazzy beats exactly where it is required and lastly as a producer you combine everything together and present it beautifully to your listeners.
